Globe and Mail story exaggerates Victoria economic picture

In a somewhat surprising story last week in the Globe and Mail the article stated an opinion that “A stroll along a downtown street last summer [în Victoria] would pass "Help Wanted" signs posted in almost every window. Now those signs are disappearing, replaced in some cases with "For Lease" signs posted in empty storefronts”

The reality is that our local unemployment rate is still among the lowest in Canada and one of the lowest in North America for cities between 350,000 and 400,000 population. And as far as empty storefronts, Colliers International of Victoria, reporting on the vacancy rate in retail says “Downtown storefront vacancy now sits at a low rate of 2.7%, down only slightly from the record set in 2007. The shopping centre vacancy rate stayed at 1.1%, as has been the case for the past 4 years, even with the addition of 66,000 square feet of new product”. Alessandro Roethel of Colliers in Victoria said that they have seen no significant shift in retail vacancies.

I think that journalists are doing an excellent job keeping us abreast of the developments in these stressful times and we should never succumb to the tempation to “shoot the messenger” but it’s important for the reader to be able to differentiate between hard news and mere opinions.
